“Life is too short. Evaluate what excites you.”
Amen to that.
#LinkedIn fam, meet today’s #FollowFriday feature, Ashley Defay.
I’ve actually known Ashley for a few years now, as we both simultaneously served as directors at large for programming in our respective LMA regions. But a passing acquaintance didn’t prepare me for how strong, passionate, articulate, and interesting an individual Ashley is.
Ashley is Organizational Communications Manager at Sidley Austin LLP, based in Chicago. She has a deep passion for her work and is always looking for ways to help others. Whether it’s through creating initiatives that encourage employees to engage in their learning and development, or actively listening to ideas from fellow colleagues, Ashley goes above and beyond what is expected of her role.
And I love the way Ashley lives life; she is always learning, growing, and seeking out new experiences. She has a talent for connecting with people and understanding the power of storytelling in furthering organizational objectives.
Ashley and I had one of my favorite conversations: prognosticating on the future of the legal industry. “What does business development and marketing look like in 2030?” she asked. “How do you get to be the $10B law firm?”
Eventually the conversation turned to her own longterm professional aspirations and what opportunities may (or frankly may not) be available to her as she ascends the career ladder.
How do we, as a profession, ensure opportunities for diverse individuals, especially those aspiring to the C-suite?
“Be open to everybody on your team. Look at your team and critically evaluate the pros and cons. Where does someone need to go? Where do they need to shine? Help them gain exposure. Give feedback in the moment. Encourage their professional development. Help people feel invested in.”
We both chuckled for a moment because those words may seem obvious. But all too often those things aren’t happening. So they bear repeating. As many times as it takes for them to sink in.
Meet my friend Ashley. I have a feeling we’ll all be working for her someday!!
PS, I have to give a shout out to Tahisha Fugate, MBA [she/her] who is the clear leader in #FollowFriday nominations and has introduced me to or reconnected me with so many outstanding women, including Ashley! I’m truly humbled by your generosity of time and spirit and support of this crazy thing I’m doing. 🥰
